Mutli Skills Festival

On Tuesday Year 2 went along to a Multi Skills Festival at Polkyth Leisure Centre.
We took part in various sporting activities to try and improve our sports skills and really
enjoyed working with children our age from two other local primary schools. We were
working in groups of six and had to listen carefully to older children from Penrice who
were directing us on each activity. The activities that we completed included jumping, ball
skills such as throwing and catching, as well as balancing activities. Most of us really
enjoyed a throwing and catching activity with the large balls. This was particularly fun as
we were challenged to see how many claps we could be between throws. Also many of
us came away with some new friends from other primary schools.

Also we are all starting to become very good resilient learners. More and more people are starting to
get their photo onto our Learning Tree each week for noticing things as we learn, becoming absorbed
in our work and even managing distractions.

Learning about the past

This week we have started our next topic which is on The Great Fire of London.
We began by finding out the year in which the Great Fire of London happened. Then we used
'Magic Grandad' to go back in time to see what it was like in the year 1666. We learnt that in 1666
people lived in wooden houses which had no drains, people travelled by horse and cart or boat and
there was no street lights instead they carried their own lamps. We have looked at how and where
the Great Fire started and how far it spread and why.

In Science we have had fun exploring forces and thinking about how pushes and pulls make objects
move. This week we all (even the teachers) really enjoyed carrying out an experiment to see how
far our car travelled on different surfaces. We used a ramp and a car and tested it on the carpet in
our classroom, the playground, the field and in our school hall. We also thought about how we could
make our experiment fair.

What a fun week!

On Thursday this week Year 2 really enjoyed World Book Day. In the morning we were busy looking at
our favourite books and studying the character that we came as. During a circle time activity we discussed
which book our character was from, what their personalities are like and whether they are a hero or a villain.
Next we went away and designed a poster for our character and the book in which they are from.
Just before dinner we shared some of our favourite stories with each other.

In the afternoon the fun continued as we really enjoyed Year 6 coming into visit us and sharing with us some of
the stories they had written. They talked about fair trade and making sure people get paid fairly for the work they
do. They had some fantastic leaflets full of information. Then we had fun with Mr Walker who came dressed as
Burglar Bill. With Mr Walker we made pop up cards with birds inside.

As a reward for our hard work over the last few days. Miss Harris had a fun treat in store!
We went into the hall and played various games with the parachute. Our favourite game was
washing machine!!

On Friday we celebrated St Piran's Day by learning about St Piran. Together we researched who St Piran was,
where he came from, how we came to Cornwall, what he discovered and how he got his name.
Do you know who St Piran was or how he got his name?

We are all Mathletics!

This week Year 2 were very lucky as they were the chosen class to trail a new computer programme called
Mathletics. On Tuesday afternoon a man came into school to talk to us about the programme. He explained
how the programme works and gave us all our very own username and passwords.

This programme lets us practise our maths skills in all the different areas of maths and we are even able to
play against children from all over the world. The part that we all enjoyed in the first lesson was creating our own
profile. We got to choose a character and then change his/her appearance so it looked funny and interesting.
We are looking forward to using it weekly to improve our maths skills and everytime we complete an activity or
game we collect points, which in turn lead to us getting certificates. Also we can buy things in the shop to make
our characters more interesting!!

DON'T FORGET - The school councils Haiti jumble sale next Wednesday and it is also World Book day next
Thursday so please come dressed as your favourite book character.

Internet Safety Week

This week was Internet Safety Week and year 2 have been looking at the importance of surfing the Internet safely.
We have thought about the different ways in which we can keep safe when using not only the Internet but when
also using other methods of technology such as mobile phones. Have a look at some of our posters.

We have also been using ICT in some of our lessons this week. In PE we used the camera to video some of us
travelling the apparatus, we have used the camera to take pictures of us in science and we also have fun sending
Roamer on the adventure of the Little Red Hen.
